Avatar: The Way of Water has finally started rolling out into theaters, and the 13-year wait for this sequel was definitely worth it based on early reactions and reviews.

Another technologically groundbreaking marvel from filmmaker James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water is the first in a number of sequels heading our way. Avatar 3 has already been shot and is expected to be released this time next year, while at least some of the fourth movie is in the can (and waiting for the green light from Disney).

With that in mind, common sense says Avatar: The Way of Water sets the stage for at least one of Cameron's three follow-ups, but does it do so with a must-see post-credits scene?

Avatar: The Way of Water, which already clocks in at over three hours long, does not have a post-credits scene. We aren't surprised Cameron hasn't chosen to follow in the MCU's footsteps, and the sequel is long enough without us being expected to sit through the credits too (though you can always do so if you want to see who worked on the movie).

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, the director confirmed that he never planned to include anything extra once the credits roll.

"There are unanswered questions by design. There are a lot of answered questions. And the specific proximal threat of this story is resolved, right?" Cameron said. "So it's more like episodic television in the sense that the characters are the characters. The characters have their problems, and those problems will persist, and they'll get resolved over multiple films."

"But the specific threat of the specific moment will always be resolved," he continued. "And that's our motif that we applied to these films."

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, the sequel begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.

Avatar: The Way of Water splashes down in theaters worldwide on December 16.
