JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION Star Laura Dern Reflects On Ellie and Alan's "Inappropriate" Age Difference

In Jurassic World Dominion, Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum will each reprise their respective roles for what's shaping up to be an epic event movie. During a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Dern looked back at her time working on the 1993 classic and opened up on the significant age difference between Dr. Alan Grant and her character Ellie Sattler.

In Jurassic Park, the two found romance in the midst of all that dino danger, and while the script pointed Ellie being in her late 20s and Alan in his mid-30s, the reality was actually a little different.

Neill was 43 years old when they shot the movie, while Dern was 20 years his junior. "At the time, [that] was a completely appropriate age difference for a leading man and lady! It never occurred to me until I opened a magazine and there was an article called 'Old geezers and gals,'" she says.

"Well, it felt completely appropriate to fall in love with Sam Neill. And it was only now, when we returned in a moment of cultural awareness about the patriarchy, that I was, like, 'Wow! We're not the same age?'" Dern continued. "Our age gap in Jurassic Park was completely inappropriate."

Dern didn't return for the Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World, but had a brief role in 2001's Jurassic Park III. In that, we learned that she had married someone else, so it will be interesting to see whether this former romance is referenced in some way or even reignited when Alan and Ellie reunite.

From Jurassic World architect and director Colin Trevorrow, Dominion takes place four years after Isla Nublar has been destroyed. Dinosaurs now live - and hunt - alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures.

Jurassic World Dominion will roar into theaters worldwide on June 10.

“I felt a completely natural attraction to another consenting adult, until a magazine told me I was ‘wrong.’”

I don’t understand. Not trying to hate, I still love & respect Lauren; I’m just genuinely perplexed. We can be so progressive and accepting; and then take it to unintelligible heights. What happened to “love is love,” and “I was born this way?” I know that’s addressed to the gay community; but does it not extend to every preference? I have friends who love it when “silver foxes come out to play.” Are they suddenly victims now? It’s their choice on who they find attractive; I and no one else can say squat about it. As long as everyone involved is of consenting age & sound mind.

Dern. What happened to this b. First Holdo now this shit. I never saw the age difference in 93 btw lol she looked way older than she actually was back then and Sam looked way younger. So get over making up problems where there are none. There are real problems out in the real world celebrity elite.

It wasn't a true love story anyway and we never saw them kissing each other. There were some hints here and there that could lead you to believe so, but nothing concrete. The actual STORY was the main focus in JP1 unlike the following movies who spent too much time on stupid characters like Owen and Claire. Grant and Ellie definitely weren't together in the original book though. It's mentioned she was engaged to someone else.

I'm sorry, but this is a complete load of nonsense. Historically, there have been a huge number of couples in which the man was anywhere from 5-20 years older than the woman (women being older is less common, but I have a cousin who is married to a woman who is over 20 years older than he is.) As long as the woman is over the age of consent, there is nothing inappropriate about a mere age difference. The fact is, as much as I hate to admit this, that women often mature more quickly than men and therefore end up dating and marrying someone at least a few years older who is at the same maturity level. There can be times when a relationship is inappropriate if one person is clearly in a position of authority over the other, but in those cases the age difference really doesn't matter, even if they are the same age the relationship is potentially inappropriate. Dern has clearly fallen for this woke, progressive nonsense about everything being about patriarchy and race and white privilege. I'm 18 years older than my fiancé (we met when I was 44 and she was 26), and if any liberal wants to try to suggest that our relationship is inappropriate just because of the age difference they're going to have a fight on their hands from both of us.
