Obi-Wan Kenobi arrives on Disney+ this May, and on May 4, Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm will release the first issue in writer Christopher Cantwell's new Star Wars: Obi-Wan anthology series.
Joined by artist Ario Anindito, the first chapter will take us back to the Jedi Master's childhood at a time when he was a youngling in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant (and before he met Qui-Gon Jinn). Talking to SYFY about what fans can expect from the eight-year-old Jedi, Cantwell explained. "I think Obi-Wan, regardless of age, has certain indelible traits. He’s incredibly loyal, and has shown deep connection to certain people in his life. He is honor-bound, but willing to push boundaries when need be."
"Part of that he likely learned from Qui-Gon, but a lot of that in my opinion is intrinsic. I think these are things that would be present in Obi-Wan from an early age," the writer continued. "Some things are already hard-wired in. Obi-Wan’s 'hard wired' traits are what we see in this story."
Future issues in the five-part series will take place at various points in Obi-Wan's life, and Cantwell would go on to tease a very different sort of adventure with Qui-Gon. "We’re going to see Obi-Wan as a padawan, which means we’re going to see him with his master, Qui-Gon. But I think the story is unexpected. I mentioned Universal horror...I tried to bring a good dose of that into Issue #2."
Exploring more of Obi-Wan's life promises to be a lot of fun, especially with that TV series on the way delving into what he was up to between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
