Is this the future of cinema?
Celebrated director Darren Aronofsky (The Whale, Black Swan) has shared a new behind-the-scenes look at his upcoming sci-fi docudrama, Postcard from Earth.
Buzz is building around the project as it is being filmed specifically for (and will only be shown on) the 170-foot-tall (52 m) high-resolution LED screen at the MSG Sphere, which is the world's largest spherical structure, with a diameter of 516 feet (157 m) and a height of 366 feet (111 m).
The screen is being billed as roughly the same size as four American football fields and is the largest screen in the world.
The venue also boasts 360-degree surround sound and state-of-the-art audio and visual technology.
Based on the footage that Aronofsky posted on Instagram, it's evident that the film is truly going to be a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience. The director called the film, "a love letter to mother earth" and stated that "my iphone can’t come close to capturing the definition on the screen. at times you forget where you are and you’re transported to the other side of our home."
Previously, Aronofsky described the project as, "a great opportunity to pluck people from the bling and thrum of the Vegas strip in all its human constructed madness and immerse them as fully as possible in the wonder, awe, and beauty of the natural world. Postcard from Earth is a sci-fi journey deep into our future as our descendants reflect on our shared home."
Postcard from Earth is currently set to premiere on The Sphere on October 6. Ticket prices for the immersive event range from $49-$199, depending on the day.
Part sci-fi story, part nature documentary, Postcard From Earth takes you on a journey from the Antarctic, deep into the ocean, across…global locations and deep into space. You will see the world like never before. It is the first cinematic project specially commissioned for Sphere and takes advantage of all our experiential technologies, from the world’s largest high-definition screen that wraps over and around you to the haptic chairs that let you feel the movie to the 167,000 speakers that immerse you in sound.
