First announced back in February 2018, it sounds as if the Josh Gad-led Honey, I Shrunk the Kids legacy-sequel, Shrunk, is in jeopardy of not moving forward. Gad provided the below update, via Twitter.
Whenever a celebrity takes to social media to urge fans to start campaigning for a project to move forward, it's a surefire sign that it's on the chopping block.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was released in 1989 and directed by Joe Johnston. The movie follows the children of the Szalinski family who are accidentally shrunk to the size of insects by their father's invention.
The film was a commercial success and received positive reviews from fans and critics alike. It was praised for its (at-the-time) innovative SFX, zany humor, and the spontaneity of the adventurous storyline. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids has remained a popular family film over the years and has even spawned a franchise with sequels like Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.
The legacy-sequel would see Gad playing an adult Nick Szalinski, who followed in his father's footsteps to become a scientist. Rick Moranis was slated to end his semi-retirement to reprise his role as Wayne Szalinski with director Joe Johnston also slated to return to the franchise.
Then again, Gad is something of a Disney fixture, as the American actor and singer is best known for voicing Olaf the Snowman in Disney’s Frozen franchise. He also played LeFou in Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation. Perhaps he can call in a few favors to move the project along?
