IMAX 70mm tickets for Dune: Part Three went on sale earlier this week, but unless you were quick on the click, you likely missed out. The tickets reportedly sold out within minutes, leaving many fans disappointed and opening the door for secondhand resellers to take advantage.
Looking to capitalize on the FOMO of missing the chance to experience this epic conclusion on the massive big screen, scalpers are listing tickets on secondhand sites like eBay for astronomical prices.
A quick search on eBay shows Dune: Part Three IMAX 70mm tickets listed for hundreds of dollars. Prices range anywhere from $200-$500 on average; however, there have been instances where they've sold for much more.
And it looks like people are willing to pay. There are already multiple sold listings, including one that went for a staggering $999.99. Just absolutely mind-boggling.
IMAX 70MM is pretty much the highest-quality version you ca nsee in a theater with resolution that far exceeds standard 4K. The image size is massive with more detail and clarity, including a unique aspect ratio up to 1.43:1. Because of this, only a small number of theaters worldwide show IMAX 70mm films, making it hard to secure tickets. Even still, I just don't know if I could justify spending hundreds of dollars a movie ticket. But that's just me.
Dune: Part Three is shaping up to be the must-see cinematic blockbuster of the holiday season, which is really saying something considering it's going up against Avengers: Doomsday. Both films are scheduled to hit theaters on December 18th and so far neither studio has wavered.
The Dune franchise has performed well at the box office, with the combined total of the first two films surpassing $1 billion worldwide. That pales in comparison to Marvel's cinematic team-ups, like Endgame ($2.79B), Infinity War ($2B), and The Avengers ($1.5B), but there feels to be a different level of excitement for Dune: Part Three, almost like the build-up of the first two movies could help push this one past the billion-dollar mark and make it a true competitor to Marvel.
Dune: Part Three also has the added avantage of securing an IMAX exclusivity window. While we don't have the exact details, Dune should have priority access on IMAX screens domestically for at least the opening weekend, and in some cases up to three weeks in the United States. We don't yet have confirmation that Avengers: Doomsday will be released in IMAX, but it's likely given Marvel's track record.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Villeneuve and Brian K. Vaughan, Dune: Part Three is based on the novel Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert and delivers the epic conclusion to Villeneuve’s trilogy. The film stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach De Bankolé, with Charlotte Rampling, with Anya Taylor-Joy, and Robert Pattinson, and Javier Bardem, and features newcomers Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke.
