Per Deadline Hollywood, Focus Features has picked up the distribution rights to actress Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos' upcoming remake of the South Korean fantasy comedy Save the Green Planet.

Along with the acquisition news, comes the reveal that the remake has been retitled, Bugonia.

Focus Features will release Bugonia in North America, while Universal Pictures will handle international distribution.

The project will mark the fifth time Stone and Lanthimos have collaborated on a project after 2018's The Favourite, 2022's Bleat,  this year's award-season darling Poor Things, and the upcoming anthology film, Kinds of Kindness.

However, unlike their previous collaborations, it's reported that Stone will only have a supporting role in the film.

Bugonia will star Jesse Plemons (Civil War) as the film's lead.

According to Deadline, the film's plot is centered on, "two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth."

Based on the plot synopsis and prior reports that Stone has a supporting role, we're willing to wager that she will portray the CEO in the upcoming sci-fi fantasy comedy.

This is fairly similar to the plot of the original Save the Green Planet film, although there appears to be some gender-swapped roles.

In the original, it's a man and his girlfriend who kidnap a male CEO on the suspicion that he's actually an extraterrestrial.

Per Collider, filming is expected to begin this Summer.

Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski stated, "Yorgos Lanthimos is a cinematic visionary with a singular style that has captivated audiences worldwide."

"We could not be more excited to partner with him, Emma and the incredible teams at Element, Square Peg and CJ ENM to reimagine this twisted and darkly funny story."

The original 2003 South Korean film is something of a cult hit, winning several honors at various fantasy festivals and securing director Jang Joon-hwan the Golden Bell Award, given to Korea's best new director.

A North American remake of the film had been in the works for quite sometime before Stone and Lanthimos boarded the project, with Jang originally set to direct from a script penned by Will Tracy (Succession, The Menu).

Save The Green Planet Synopsis (original film)
A man kidnaps the CEO of a major chemical company, with the belief that the CEO is in fact an alien in disguise. His reason? He thinks the alien is the source of his recent unhappiness. Got a straightjacket?
