Avatar: The Way of Water recently became the fastest movie of 2022 to pass the $1 billion mark, and it looks like James Cameron's sci-fi sequel intends to continue breaking records well into 2023.
Despite a slightly lower than predicted opening weekend, The Way of Water has been raking it in since hitting theaters on December 16, and has now amassed a mighty $1.379B worldwide. $957M of that total came from overseas territories, which means the movie should pass $1 billion internationally by this time tomorrow.
Perhaps even more impressively, The Way of Water took in $63.4M in its third weekend domestically - a 0% drop from its second weekend! At this rate, the movie will surely hit $2 billion before the end of its theatrical run. As things stand, it's the 15th biggest movie of all time globally, overtaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
