Big news for fans of Paramount Pictures' Cloverfield franchise here, as Deadline is reporting that a fourth movie is officially in development. Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow, I Came By) has been enlisted to direct, with J.J. Abrams once again on board as producer via Bad Robot, with Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen. Bryan Burk, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard will executive produce.
Joe Barton is currently writing the script, but plot details are being kept under wraps.
The Cloverfield franchise is something of an anomaly, as it's made up of three film with only tenuous connections. 2008's Cloverfield was a found footage-style monster movie about a giant creature terrorising a city, while 10 Cloverfield Lane was more of a paranoid thriller with some vague sci-fi elements. Most recently, we had the rather dreadful The Cloverfield Paradox, which focused on a group of astronauts faced with a mysterious alien threat.
Whether this latest instalment will directly tie-in with any of its predecessors or tell a completely new story remains to be seen, but this is the first time the studio has actually announced that a Cloverfield movie is in the works. Both 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox were filmed as properties under different titles (The Cellar and God Particle, respectively), and weren't revealed to be Cloverfield projects until the trailers premiered.
