Earlier today, Neon debuted the first official trailer for David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future, which which will premiere in-competition at the Cannes Film Festival this May.
This one has already gained a bit of notoriety, with one insider claiming that the sci-fi horror film is likely to cause a significant amount of “chaos and controversy,” with the last 20 minutes, in particular, expected to cause "walk-outs, fainting and real panic attacks." Looking at the trailers (a French version with a lot more footage is also online), it's not hard to see why!
Check out the trailers below along with a poster, and let us know what you think.
The film is set "in a distant future where humans have evolved beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. In this setting, a performance artist named Saul Tenser embraces Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body. Removing those organs becomes a new kind of theater, one that earns a following, as well as the attention of the government."
It really doesn't get any more Cronenbergian than that!
Viggo Mortensen is set to play the lead (Tenser, we assume), re-teaming with Cronenberg after starring in A History of Violence, Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. He'll be joined by Kristen Stewart, Léa Seydoux, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar and Lihi Kornowski.
