Godzilla: King of the Monsters was unleashed in 2019 to middling reviews, but it set the stage for the next chapter in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong. In that, the previous movie's villainous Kaiju, King Ghidorah, returned as the consciousness of Mecha-Godzilla, an undeniably clever idea that allowed this beast to take one more crack at laying its greatest foe to waste.

Fans remain optimistic that we could eventually see Mecha-King Ghidorah, of course, but with Godzilla's big screen future something of a mystery to us, it's hard to say whether that will happen.

Ghidorah, who obviously has a storied history outside of the MonsterVerse, will return somewhere down the line, and we just hope creature designer Ken Barthelmey is involved when he does. The artist recently took to Twitter to share some unused designs from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, showcasing a terrifying take on the monster emphasising its dragon-like appearance.

Beauty and the Beast star Dan Stevens was recently cast in this franchise's next instalment, though we don't expect to see Ghidorah there as the rumoured plan is to focus on Kong's son. That suggests a futuristic setting, though very little has been revealed about what to expect.
