Earlier this month, it was just reported that Louis Leterrier (Fast X, The Incredible Hullk) would be directing the sci-fi pic, 11817, and now we have the film's two main leads.
Greta Lee (Past Lives, The Morning Show, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) And Kingsley Ben-Adir (Barbie, Bob Marley: One Love) have signed on to star in the film, according to Deadline Hollywood.
Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying) wrote the script.
The film will be shopped to potential buyers at this year's upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
This year's Cannes is set to take place from Tue, May 14, 2024 – Sat, May 25, 2024, so we should soon learn what studio/streamer has purchased distribution rights for the pic.
11817 is produced by Leterrier’s Carrousel Studios, Rocket Science, Thank You Studios, Chernin Entertainment (A North Road Company) and 3 Arts Entertainment.
The synopsis for the film reads, "In 11817, inexplicable forces trap a family of four inside their house indefinitely. As both modern luxuries and life or death essentials begin to run out, the family must learn how to be resourceful to survive and outsmart who – or what – is keeping them trapped."
Based on the premise, we're willing to wager that the film will take place in a futuristic setting and it's likely that a malfunctioning A.I. will ultimately be revealed as the culprit that's keeping the family from leaving their home.
At first blush, we're seeing similarities between 2019's I Am Mother and 2014's Ex Machina.
However, these are just our best guesses, stay tuned for future updates on the project as additional casting is said to be underway. The full cast should likely reveal more clues about the film's plot.
In a press release, Leterrier previously stated, "Directing projects where the audience gets behind the characters has always been my focus. However complex, flawed, heroic, we identify with them as we live through their journey."
"It’s what excites me about 11817‘s wholly original concept and the family at the heart of our story. This is an experience that movie audiences won’t forget.”
It's worth noting that Lee is starring as one of the leads in Tron: Ares and Leterrier is attached to direct the next and final installment in the Fast & Furious franchise. If Tron :Ares needs reshoots or Universal decides they want to fast-track the next F&F film, both Lee and/or Leterrier's availability could change.
