Josh Hutcherson stars as Franklin Fox in director Rusty Cundieff's sci-fi thriller 57 Seconds, which sees a blogger (Hutcherson) stumble across a ring that allows its wearer to travel back 57 seconds in time. With this newfound ability, Fox decides to take down the pharmaceutical company responsible for his sister's death.
Morgan Freeman stars as a tech guru named Anton Burrell who guides Fox on how to use the ring.
Fans of the sci-fi thriller drama are immediately drawing comparisons to The Butterfly Effect, Limitless, About Time, and the British television series, The Lazarus Project. However, the main difference with this film is that the protagonist can only go back in time for 57 seconds. That's certainly an interesting restriction to explore.
The film is based on the short story Lucifer, written by British sci-fi author E.C. Tubbs.
Previously, Cundieff described 57 Seconds as an exploration of the modern world's ability to instantly react to circumstances and situations without careful thought.
"Today we have tools at our fingertips that allow us to respond to events at the moment, short-circuiting our time to be thoughtful and consider the consequences. 57 Seconds examines how emotions influence the innate human desire to solve things quickly via technology, be it a gun, pill or computer."
57 Seconds is currently set to be released in North America on September 29, 2023, in theaters and digital OnDemand the same day.
