Prey has received overwhelmingly positive reactions on social media since premiering at the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday evening, and while it's heading to Hulu instead of theatres, we've no doubt fans will want a sequel. Disney is now in charge of the Predator franchise after acquiring 20th Century Fox, and this movie definitely feels like the perfect fresh start.
While Prey works as a standalone story, we did have to ask director Dan Trachtenberg about whether he's got sequel plans during a conversation earlier this week.
In the video below, the filmmaker explains that even though the movie doesn't have a post-credits scene [MINOR SPOILER ALERT], fans should keep a close eye on the end credits. Why? Well, he reveals that those set the stage for a potential sequel set during this same time period.
"I think there’s definitely something…because so many movies are seen as franchise starters, there’s something inherently refreshing about a movie that feels complete," Trachtenberg says. "I hope this movie does feel complete."
"That said, we do something very unique in that, whereas other movies may have a post-credits scene, we have some storytelling inside our end credits themselves. It leaves room for lots of different kinds of sequels to be made. I don’t know if we’re ready yet to say exactly what we want to do next, but I think there are lots of cool opportunities."
Producer Jhane Myers also chimed in to say, "I would love to return to this world. I’d like to return to any world where there’s Native inclusion and representation because that is my world. I’d love to return to any Native world."
Something tells us there are early plans for a Prey 2, though those all-important streaming numbers on Hulu will likely dictate whether that happens. However, with so much early buzz surrounding the reboot and fans eager to see more Predator on screen, we'd be shocked if this movie doesn't mark the beginning of an exciting future for the iconic aliens.
Prey is set to be released on Hulu on August 5.
