A24 has debuted the first official trailer for their upcoming fantasy romantic comedy, Eternity, starring Marvel mainstay and Primetime Emmy Award-nominee Elizabeth Olsen. The film centers on Joan, a woman caught in a deeply emotional afterlife dilemma: Should she spend eternity with Larry (Miles Teller), her devoted husband with whom she built a life, or Luke (Callum Turner), her first love who died young while serving in a war and has been waiting for her ever since?
The official synopsis reads: “In an afterlife where souls have one week to decide where to spend eternity, Joan is faced with the impossible choice between the man she spent her life with and her first love, who died young and has waited decades for her to arrive.”
With Olsen, Teller, and Turner leading the ensemble, Eternity is poised to be one of the most talked-about premieres at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival, with early buzz suggesting it could also enjoy a strong box office run this Fall, especially with romantic comedies seemingly enjoying a semi-renaissance at the box office.
The star-studded cast also includes Academy Award-winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers, Only Murders in the Building), John Early (Search Party, Would It Kill You to Laugh?), and Tony Award-nominee Olga Merediz (In the Heights, Brooklyn Nine-Nine).
Directed by David Freyne, the film is based on a screenplay by Pat Cunnane, which gained industry attention after being named one of the best unproduced scripts on the 2022 Black List.
Olsen, of course, is best known for her role as Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She has portrayed the fan-favorite character in six films and three Disney+ series, including the upcoming Marvel Zombies. While Wanda was last seen presumed dead in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, speculation continues to swirl that she’ll return in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars—though nothing has been confirmed by Marvel just yet.
Eternity will premiere at the 50th annual Toronto International Film Festival in Septmber, and will be released theatrically in the United States in November.
