Cameras are set to start rolling on Riddick: Furya this Summer, on August 26.
The film will mark the fourth installment in the Vin Diesel-led franchise, which debuted in 2000 with Pitch Black. Subsequent sequels include 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick and 2013’s Riddick.
Filming will take place overseas, in Spain, Germany and the U.K.
Along with the news comes a brief synopsis, which reads, "in 'Riddick: Furya,' Riddick finally returns to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there, he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster — and some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined."
Richard B. Riddick, typically known as just Riddick, is a multifaceted antihero who is frequently presented as a violent criminal on the run. He is said to be the final member of the Furyan race, a warrior race possessing unique skills including keen night vision. Though ruthless and resourceful, Riddick is not a hero; instead, he is frequently thrust into life-threatening circumstances.
Riddick's adventures leads him to end up commanding the Necromongers for a while until he is betrayed after becoming entangled with ambitious members within the religious order. The third movie leaves audiences with the impression that Riddick will be back for retribution in the fourth film, as he was betrayed and left for dead on a barren planet but manages to survive.
David Twohy, who wrote and directed the previous three installments, returns to assume the same duties for the latest project.
Over on Instagram, Diesel has been teasing that Riddick news was imminent while also cautioning that one of his many other projects, Fast 11, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, or Kojak could complicate his schedule.
Well, it looks as if fans waiting on the last installment in the Fast & Furious franchise will have to wait a little bit longer as Furya will be first up on Diesel's docket.
Pitch Black grossed $53.2M worldwide from an estimated production budget of $32M. The film has a 60% approval rating from film critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Chronicles of Riddick grossed $115.8M from a production budget of $105M. Critics were less kind with the sequel, giving it a 29% approval rating.
Riddick amassed $98.3M worldwide from a much smaller production budget of just $38M. While the third film was the most commercially successful (in terms of profit margin) it to received a 'rotten" score from Rotten Tomatoes with a 58% approval rating.
While the Riddick films are likely never going to win over critics, Diesel and Twohy are definitely hoping that the next installment matches the box office prowess of the third entry.
