The Matrix is a beloved, classic sci-fi movie but its sequels, Reloaded and Revolutions, were widely considered disappointments. However, the latter still ended the trilogy in style, and while there were occasional rumblings about a reboot, that was where we thought the story had ended.
Last December, Warner Bros. released The Matrix Resurrections, bringing back a number of key cast members, including Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. After finding a way to resurrect Neo and Trinity, the very meta movie also saw Morpheus make his return, though he was played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
While we can't fault that casting decision, fans of The Matrix were disappointed that Laurence Fishburne had been completely overlooked. The actor appeared via archival footage, but his absence was one of many issues people found with what proved to be another bad sequel to the original movie.
Recently, Fishburne was asked if he watched The Matrix Resurrections, and it doesn't sound like he was overly impressed.
"Yes, I did. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...and it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be," the actor said, drawing laughs. "I thought Carrie-Anne and Keanu really did their thing and, yeah, that's what I thought."
Pushed on whether he regrets missing out, Fishburne deadpanned, "No, not really."
We're guessing the actor was just glad to escape what proved to be a Rotten movie, though it is a shame the franchise ended on such a disappointing note. The cast definitely gave it their all, but that wasn't enough to save the muddled screenplay and mediocre direction.
