Voltron fans have finally had some good news about that long-rumoured live-action movie, but as is so often the case, it's accompanied by some potentially concerning news.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon is looking to pick up the project, meaning it will forgo a theatrical release and head straight to streaming. That's not the end of the world, of course, but fans may be disappointed to learn that Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber is attached to take the helm of this Voltron movie.
He came up with the story and will co-write the script with Ellen Shanman (The Hidden Girl), and while Red Notice was a hit for Netflix, it also sits at a lowly 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. Thurber's other credits include Central Intelligence and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, so he doesn't exactly feel like a natural fit for this movie. We'll give the filmmaker the benefit of the doubt, but colour us concerned.
The first season was an adaptation of the Japanese anime series Beast King GoLion. The second season was adapted from the unrelated anime series Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.
While Voltron never quite reached the same level of popularity as Transformers, Voltron: Defender of the Universe was the top-rated syndicated children's show for two years during its original run in 1984 and 1985. It spawned three follow-up series, several comic books, and as was especially popular in the 80s, a line of Voltron toys, all based upon the story of five young pilots who are part of a battalion named the Robot Lions, piloting vehicles that join together to form a mega-robot known as Voltron.
Attempts to make a Voltron movie have been ongoing since 2000, and it's unclear when Thurber will get around to this seeing as he's planning two shoot two Red Notice sequels for Netflix back-to-back.
