Ahsoka was a fun ride, particularly for Star Wars Rebels fans, but it left us with more questions than answers. Lucasfilm failed to fill in the gaps between both shows, leaving the story of how Grand Admiral Thrawn allied himself with the Nightsisters, and what the deal with Captain Enoch was, for another day.
Wes Chatham, who played Thrawn's second-in-command, recently caught up with Entertainment Weekly and was asked about the mysterious villain's sinister appearance.
"When I saw the Captain Enoch uniform for the first time, it reminded me of Excalibur," he explained. "And I remember having a conversation with Dave Filoni and he was excited that I picked up that detail."
"You’re standing in the hangar bay of a Star Destroyer that you’ve watched your whole life and stormtroopers are walking by, so it was walking into a dream that I got to be a part of the thing," Chatham continues. "And it was exhilarating. It was some of the most fun I’ve ever had."
"I have a lot of respect for Dave Filoni. I have a lot of respect for what he’s done, what he’s doing with Star Wars and for Star Wars. And so to be something that he created and a wholly original thing is really exciting and really compelling."
In terms of what's to come, the actor chose his words carefully but suggested Enoch will be a key part of whatever Thrawn has planned for the Galaxy.
"I think the potential of this character is exciting. There are some vague hints," he says. "There has to be a reason that that character is there. Thrawn introduced one person."
There's clearly a story to be told with Captain Enoch, but it won't be until Ahsoka season 2 - and possibly even Filoni's planned Star Wars movie - that we get to see who or what is beneath that helmet.
Set after the fall of the Empire, Ahsoka follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.
In addition to Rosario Dawson in the title role, the series stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Eman Esfandi appearing as Ezra Bridger.
Ahsoka was written by Dave Filoni, who executive produces alongside Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, and Carrie Beck. Directors include Filoni, Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Rick Famuyiwa.
All episodes of Ahsoka are now streaming on Disney+.
