Some don't like hearing this, but Star Wars has always been political, and it sounds like the upcoming Andor Disney+ series is going to lean into the social commentary in a way we haven't seen in any of our previous trips to the Galaxy Far, Far Away.
Executive produced by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-writer Tony Gilroy, the prequel show will chart the early adventures of the somewhat morally dubious Rebel agent we first met in that underrated 2016 film, as he attempts to infiltrate and fight back against an evil Empire as it slowly strips away the rights of the common folk.
Sound familiar?
While chatting to Empire Magazine, legendary Irish actress Fiona Shaw, who plays Cassian Andor's surrogate mother Maarva in the Disney+ series, said she "was impressed by Tony’s social-realist intentions.” “He’s created a whole new morality. It’s very deep and humane – there is grief, mourning, hope, fear. It’s not just primary colours here.”
"Tony has written a great, scurrilous [take] on the Trumpian world,” she continued. “Our world is exploding in different places right now, people’s rights are disappearing, and Andor reflects that. [In the show] the Empire is taking over, and it feels like the same thing is happening in reality, too.”
What do you guys make of Shaw's comments? Andor is set to premiere on September 21. Check out the most recent trailer below.
