John Boyega recently sat down with Tech Radar to promote his upcoming Netflix movie, They Cloned Tyrone, but the conversation soon turned to Star Wars.
In the past, Boyega was particularly critical of how Finn's story arc ultimately played out from Episode VII to Episode IX.
However, in the last three years, Boyega's stance has somewhat mellowed, going from scathing criticism to impassivity.
Back in 2020, Boyega told GQ, "Nobody else in the cast had people saying they were going to boycott the movie because [they were in it]. Nobody else had the uproar and death threats sent to their Instagram DMs and social media, saying, ‘Black this and black that and you shouldn’t be a Stormtrooper.’ Nobody else had that experience. But yet people are surprised that I’m this way. That’s my frustration."
Then in 2023, Boyega told The Times, "I feel like the arc that J.J. tried to tie up, that’s where I feel comfortable with the release of [Finn]."
As you can see, that's a marked change in his viewpoint.
Now, Boyega is now on record as being officially open to returning to the Franchise.
"That [those comments] was a few years ago, so they were the subject of that particular project. But I'm open to all characters and scripts that are enjoyable, have a great cast attached, and a terrific director. So yeah, I'm open to all opportunities."
This comment swirls around rumors that Finn is in line to return in a new trilogy that's centered around Daisy Ridley's Rey, who is trying to restart the Jedi Order.
During Star Wars Celebration 2023, Kathleen Kennedy described the project as, "Well, we’re 15 years out from ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ so we’re post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray. There’s a lot of discussion around, ‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?’ She’s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, based on what she promised Luke, so that’s where we’re going."
The new trilogy will be directed by Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
