Heading into The Game Awards 2025, fans were buzzing about a possible major Star Wars reveal, with many hoping for the long-awaited Knights of the Old Republic Remake. That didn’t happen, but we did get the next best thing: a spiritual successor, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
Currently in early development, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a narrative-driven, single player RPG helmed by legendary game director Casey Hudson (director of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy). Players will "step into the role of a Force user on a journey through a galaxy on the edge of rebirth."
The announcement was accompanied by a brief teaser trailer that set the tone for what fans could expect from this next adventure in a galaxy far, far away.
"Blending innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and heart-pounding combat, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will immerse you in an unforgettable experience where every decision deepens your journey toward the light…or the darkness," the description teases, suggesting a morality system similar to KOTOR where your actions and choices will determine your alignment with the Light Side or Dark Side of the Force.
In an interview with StarWars.com, Hudson confirmed that Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is not a continuation or sequel to 2003's Knights of the Old Republic, but it is a spiritual successor to the beloved classic.
“Working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was one of the defining experiences of my career,” said Casey Hudson, Game Director at Arcanaut Studios. “With Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, we’re telling a completely new and different story with everything we’ve learned since - crafting an adventure about choice, destiny, and the timeless struggle between light and dark. It’s a dream come true to once again collaborate with Lucasfilm Games.”
Hudson is leading a team of seasoned developers who have previously worked together on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect Trilogy. Arcanaut Studios, which formed in 2025, is comprised of talent from across the industry, including Microsoft, Epic, Remedy, The Coalition, and ZeniMax.
“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a definitive Star Wars experience — crafting an adventure that consisted of all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson added. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our aspirations are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is currently in early development with no release window as of yet. The game is being developed for PC and consoles. Fate of the Old Republic was one of two Star Wars games revealed at The Game Awards, the second being a racing title from developers of Need for Speed and Burnout.
