According to a new rumour (via FearHQ.com), Netflix is looking to make an American remake of his South Korean drama Squid Game. A second season of the critically acclaimed sci-fi/horror series is currently in the works, and it appears the streaming platform hopes to capitalise on the franchise's popularity with an English-language version.
Something that makes this news a little more exciting, however, is the fact Netflix is said to be "courting David Fincher to produce and direct an American take on Squid Game."
It's unclear whether the filmmaker behind movies like Fight Club, Se7en, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is interested, but he did previously work with the streamer on the short-lived series Mindhunter. It sounds like Netflix "badly" wants him to take the helm of this remake, so we'll see what happens.
Squid Game debuted on Netflix in 2021 and became an overnight success, reportedly garnering as many as 1.65 billion viewing hours in just four weeks to become their most-watched series ever.
Reviews were also overwhelmingly positive, with star Lee Jung-jae since landing a role in the upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte.
As well as Squid Game's upcoming second season, Netflix is developing a reality series called Squid Game: The Challenge, though that hasn't been without its fair share of controversies following allegations of contestants being treated poorly.
It's hard to say what new ideas a Squid Game remake can bring to the table. However, we'd definitely trust Fincher to put a fresh spin on the concept.
