There's a lot of excitement for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series coming to Disney+, but it's now been confirmed that we'll be waiting a little longer than expected for the Son of Poseidon's small screen debut.
The expectation was that it would arrive next year, but in a new post from author and executive producer Rick Riordan, he explains why that's no longer possible. "Previously, I have said that my own personal best guess was sometime in 2023. I also warned you that this could definitely change."
"Now that I have a somewhat better understanding of the work involved, here's what I am estimating," the writer continued. "It's probably going to take us through December or into January to film all the episodes of season one, which is roughly one month of filming per episode (eight episodes total), though very often we are filming pieces of 101, 102, or even 103 out of order on any given day, depending on what set we are using."
Riordan added that he believes post-production will now take place early next year, and given how time-consuming that can be, "I think the most likely air date will probably be early 2024."
It's worth noting that the writer would point out that decision is ultimately down to Disney+, and we actually think Percy Jackson and the Olympians could arrive late next year rather than slipping as far down the calendar as Riordan seems to think. Perhaps we'll get some clarification during this September's Disney+ Day?
Based on Disney Hyperion's best-selling book series, the series tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who's just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.
With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.
Stay tuned for updates on Percy Jackson and the Olympians!
