A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 may have just ended, but HBO is wasting no time jumping into the thick of Season 2. With the Game of Thrones prequel spin-off renewed even before the series premiered, it has allowed for early production. In fact, filming has already been underway since last month.
With so much excitement surrounding A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO is continuing to dish out exciting production news, including updates on the Season 2 cast. Today, three new cast members were announced: Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody, The Politician) as Lady Rohanne of Coldmoat, Babou Ceesay (Invasion) as Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield, and Peter Mullan (Ozark, Westworld, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) as Ser Eustace Osgrey of Standfast in the Reach. Although Boynton had previously been been confirmed, we hadn't known about the casting of Ser Eustace Osgrey and Ser Bennis the Brown until today.
As you're probably well aware by now, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin's novellas, Tales of Dunk and Egg, which are set about 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The stories follow the adventures of Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall and his squire Egg, who later becomes King Aegon V Targaryen. The series is focused on a smaller, more personal slice of Westeros life compared to Game of Thrones.
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapted the first of the three novellas, "The Hedge Knight". Season 2 will focus on the second novella, "The Sword Sword," in which Dunk serves as a hedge kngiht in service to a lord. While Rohanne and Bennis do appear in The Hedge Knight novella, HBO opted not to include them in the first season as it focused more on Dunk and Egg's tournament adventures.
Lady Rohanne of Coldmoat (Lucy Boynton) is described as a sharp-witted noblewoman of the Reach known for her intelligence and influence. Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield (Babou Ceesay) is a skilled knight whose prowess in tournaments challenges Dunk and other young knights. Ser Eustace Osgrey of Standfast (Peter Mullan) is a Reach knight involved in local feuds and political intrigues, and he will appear in the adaptation’s second season.
Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was met with amazing success, with HBO confirming that the series averaged around 14 million U.S. viewers per episode and 26 million globally. While that didn't quite reach the highs of Game of Thrones, it was still a strong performer, and the third-largest series debut since HBO Max launched.
A century before the events of “Game of Thrones,” two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.
Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is currently in production with filming underway. HBO expects the series to return in 2027.
