Conleth Hill was one of Game of Thrones' main supporting characters as the all-knowing Varys, but the Irish actor has now expressed unhappiness with how things ended for the spymaster also known as the Spider.
During the show's fifth season, Varys left King's Landing and allied himself with Daenerys Targaryen. However, upon learning that Jon Snow was the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, he changed allegiance and ended up being executed by dragon fire for his troubles.
Game of Thrones' eighth and final season was incredibly divisive and the way the fantasy series ended is still being discussed four years later.
Now, Hill has become the latest cast member to criticise the popular HBO series.
"I thought I’d done something wrong," he admitted in an interview with The Times. "Right up until the last two series, I had no complaints at all. I just felt frustrated with the last couple of series because Varys wasn’t the all-knowing character he had been."
"I think the writers wanted to do one thing to end it and the studio HBO wanted to do another," the actor continued. "I felt that last series was a bit rushed. I was inconsolable, but now I’m fine about it."
It's interesting to hear that there might have been some behind-the-scenes clashes, and those would go some way in explaining why Game of Thrones' final season - and the finale, in particular, felt like it was all over the place.
While Hill is within his right to be unhappy with how Varys' story ended, it's a little strange as many would argue he went out on a high. That death scene was very memorable, and his prediction about Daenerys proved correct, confirming the Spider still knew what he was talking about.
Hollywood has come to a standstill thanks to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though we remain hopeful the planned Jon Snow spin-off starring Kit Harington becomes a reality. If so, we'll get to see what became of that character and, hopefully, get a slightly more satisfying epilogue to the main series.
