The biggest, most haunted ruin in Westeros is doing a lot of heavy lifting this season. House of the Dragon returns this Sunday, July 26th, with episode 6, "Battle in the Riverlands," and Harrenhal is once again sitting at the dark center of it all.

New episodes drop Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max, and Season 3 runs through its finale on August 9th.

The Curse of Harrenhal Explained

Harrenhal was raised by Harren "the Black" Hoare, who spent 40 years and untold enslaved lives building the largest castle in Westeros, right as Aegon the Conqueror's dragons turned up to burn him alive inside it. Ever since, the place has carried a reputation as cursed ground. House after house has taken it and met ruin soon after, from the extinct Qoherys line to House Harroway, wiped out under Maegor the Cruel, to House Towers, which fizzled out behind them. It's the largest castle ever built in Westeros, and dragonfire twisted its towers into melted stone in a single day, a permanent monument to what the place costs anyone who claims it.

Harrenhal is where power tends to slip, and Season 3 keeps leaning on that. Aemond Targaryen now holds the castle for the Greens after castellan Simon Strong handed it over without a fight, and the ruin is already working on him.

What is "Battle in the Riverlands" building toward? With Aemond dug in at Harrenhal and Criston Cole pushing a Green host through the region, the Riverlands have become the war's central pressure point, and Rhaenyra's Blacks can't afford to cede the middle of the map without losing the whole war. The episode title reads like a promise.

Aemond's Turn In The Dark

This should sound familiar... Daemon Targaryen spent much of Season 2 lost in Harrenhal's halls under the spell of Alys Rivers, the mysterious healer with a gift for prophecy. Now Aemond, wounded and isolated after falling out with his own family, is being drawn into that same orbit.

Showrunner Ryan Condal has been open about the echo. "We know that Harrenhal is a strange place. The idea was to give Aemond a parallel experience to Daemon, if not exactly the same," he explained, framing this as the moment the neglected, bullied prince from Season 1 either grows up or comes apart. Alys, he said, arrives right as Aemond "feels this sudden magnetic draw to her."

Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond, put it more colorfully, calling Harrenhal "the White Lotus of Westeros" - a place that strips its guests of their defenses and leaves the real person exposed. He's said Aemond's newly vulnerable side is the most interesting thing he has gotten to play, a real turn for a character who spent two seasons as pure menace. Gayle Rankin, meanwhile, has promised Alys and Aemond's dynamic goes somewhere different than her scenes with Daemon, with her true backstory and identity finally coming to light this year, a reveal that could reshape how her hold over two different Targaryen princes reads.

Harrenhal is a pressure cooker: the one place on the map where the Dance of the Dragons keeps warping the people fighting it. We dug into what else episode 6 has in store, including Ormund Hightower's maneuvering, in our full preview.

Do you think Aemond walks out of Harrenhal stronger than Daemon did, or does the curse claim another Targaryen? Sound off in the comments below!

Nate has loved comics from a very young age and continues to read them on a regular basis thanks to subscriptions to various titles (both Marvel and DC). He also loves movies, as his wife and children will attest. He's not overly critical of movies, so his reviews should be taken with a grain of salt as he's much more interested in being entertained and escaping the "real" world for a couple of hours than finding every conceivable plot-hole and character flaw in a film.

Outside of his guilty "nerdy" pleasures, Nate enjoys spending time with his wife and three boys, CrossFit, playing guitar, coaching youth sports and MMA (he spent a couple of years in the cage as an NHB fighter, but is now MUCH too old).
