News broke last week that British actor Robbie Coltrane had passed away at the age of 72. The news sent shockwaves across the internet and an outpouring of grief followed.
Beloved for his work as Hagrid in the Harry Potter franchise, he was also known for starring in the James Bond movies and ITV's Cracker, among countless either memorable projects. Now, Deadline has revealed Coltrane's cause of death, and we're sorry to say it doesn't make for the most pleasant reading.
According to the trade, the actor died following multiple organ failure. His death certificate also noted that he'd been suffering from sepsis, a lower respiratory tract infection, and heart block. Coltrane had previously been diagnosed with obesity and Type 2 diabetes, so was clearly extremely unwell prior to his death.
Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe shared a statement with the trade paying tribute to his co-star.
"Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set. I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up."
"I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man."
Rupert Grint and Emma Watson also shared tributes on Instagram, and it's clear that no one who worked with Coltrane had a bad word to say about him. He'd taken on very few acting roles in recent years, so his health had obviously been declining for a while; the actor did, however, appear in HBO's Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Robbie's family.
