Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro won a "Best Picture" Oscar for The Shape of Water, and after following that up with last year's Nightmare Alley (which drew mixed responses), he's now set to head into the animated realm for Netflix. Pinocchio is a stop-motion musical fantasy, and the streaming service has now dropped the first full-length trailer and poster.
Obviously unrelated to this September's remake from Disney, Del Toro and Adventure Time creative director Patrick McHale are adapting Carlo Collodi's 1883 novel The Adventures Of Pinocchio.
Based on what we see here, this is going to be a classic Del Toro romp, and it looks in equal part weird and whimsical. The trailer is narrated by Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor, and while this will be a family-friendly movie, it looks vastly different to the live-action version heading to Disney+ in September.
The movies are coming out in very close proximity to one another, so it will be interesting seeing how the responses to them differ. Both of them look very good in different ways, though we're particularly excited to see what Del Toro does with this take on the story that inspired the 1940 cartoon made by Disney.
"Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi's classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto," reads the official synopsis. "This whimsical, stop-motion musical directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world."
Pinocchio's voice cast includes Gregory Mann as Pinocchio, Ewan McGregor as Cricket, and David Bradley as Geppetto. The ensemble also features Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton.
The movie will be released on Netflix and in select theaters this December.
