After three days of deliberation and six weeks of testimony, it's being reported that Johnny Depp has won his whirlwind defamation case against Amber Heard.
The Virginia jury ruled unanimously in Depp's favor earlier this afternoon, confirming that Heard did defame him when she wrote her op-ed in The Washington Post, which stated she was a victim of domestic abuse and that the former Pirates of the Caribbean star was her domestic abuser.
Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages, plus $5 million in punitive damages - but since Virginia law states that punitive damages cannot exceed $350,000, that figure has been reduced.
It wasn't all bad news for Heard today as she did win her countersuit, which states Depp defamed her in responding to her initial claims, and was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages. However, in total, she now owes Depp $8,350,000.
While there's still a possibility Heard will appeal the decision, today's verdict should bring their three-year saga to an end.
As for what happens to the respective careers of both actors, it's hard to predict as this case has likely brought irreparable damage to both - despite Depp seemingly re-winning the court of public opinion throughout the course of the trial. While fans have clamored for his return as Captain Jack Sparrow, it's highly improbable Disney will reverse course on their decision to move on without him.
There aren't any notable projects on his upcoming slate, but Heard is still set to appear in James Wan's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom next year, although it's been widely reported that she will only have ten minutes of screentime. Whether or not that changes by the time of release remains to be seen.
