It's Memorial Day weekend, and that means box office figures are a little more all over the place than they usually might be.
However, as things stand, all signs point to it being a magical three and four-day weekend for The Little Mermaid. Deadline (via Toonado.com) reports that the latest live-action Disney remake is eyeing $97 million - $98 million from Friday to Sunday and $121 million - $123 million from Friday to Monday in North America.
While you'll notice that these figures are slightly lower than some early estimates, that's the nature of the beast when attempts are made to project an unpredictable four-day weekend and The Little Mermaid is landing where it was expected.
Overseas, it's believed the movie has earned $68.3 million during its three-day opening weekend for a current global total of somewhere around the $164 million mark. It is underperforming in China and there's been a lot of review bombing happening, prompting some sites - such as IMDb - to put up advisory messages.

As for that review bombing, both Rotten Tomatoes and CinemaScore tell a very different story from what you might be seeing in other corners of the internet. On the former, it has a 95% Audience Score from verified ticket buyers, while CinemaScore (which polls moviegoers as they leave theaters) has awarded it an A grade.
The movie is definitely playing well with audiences and you probably don't need us to tell you why some have decided to attack the remake. It's beyond sad to see that happening in 2023, but this is the world we live in.
Whether The Little Mermaid has legs in the weeks ahead remains to be seen, but it will soon face competition from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. With repeat viewings, however, and the fact there are a lot of Disney fans who love movies like this, we're sure it will be one of the year's bigger hits.
