A new take on The Wizard of Oz is in the works at Warner Bros., with Black-Ish creator Kenya Barris on board to write and direct.
We don't have very much to go on, as Barris is said to be "keeping the creative details close to the vest, but the project is said to be a modern reimagining of the iconic musical.
L. Frank Baum's beloved 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was most famously adapted as 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland, but we've seen a number of sequels, spin-offs and re-imaginings over the years. Most recently, Sam Raimi's helmed a prequel film titled Oz The Great and Powerful starring James Franco and Mila Kunis.
In the novel, Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto are caught up in a cyclone that takes them and the farmhouse they live in to Munchkin Country in the magical Land of Oz. The falling house kills the Wicked Witch of the East, summoning the Good Witch of the North. She tells Dorothy that the only way she can return home to Kansas is to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and ask the great and powerful Wizard of Oz to help her.
On their journey, Dorothy and Toto are joined by a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodman, and a Cowardly Lion.
It'll be interesting to see what Barris' "modern" retelling of the story entails, but if he deviates too much from the original tale, expect a significant amount of fan backlash!
