There's a tonne of excitement for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, especially after two disappointing movie adaptations of the hit series of novels. The hope is that Disney+ can finally do Rick Riordan's work justice, and while shooting continues on the show's first season, fans are already eager for news on a possible season 2.
Talking to GoodReads, Riordan, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, shared a promising update about the franchise's future beyond the first eight episodes.
Asked if each season will correspond with each of his books, the author responded, "That's the idea, yes. Of course, first we have to get approval to do future seasons. Right now, we are only green-lit for one season, but if you all watch and like it, I am optimistic we will get approval to do more."
Riordan was also asked how hands-on he's been with Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and it's clear the writer is heavily involved. "I will be watching it every step of the way, from audition tapes all the way through to the final cut of every episode. I imagine it will be like my books in some ways. By the time one is published, I don't need to sit down and read it because I've read it while I was writing it like a hundred times!"
Based on Disney Hyperion's best-selling book series, the series tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who's just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.
With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians also stars Aryan Simhadri, Leah Sava Jeffries, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Timm Sharp, Olivea Morton, Dior Goodjohn, and Charlie Bushnell.
The show doesn't have an official release date yet, though the expectation is that it will arrive sometime in 2024. Hopefully, we'll get some official news during Disney+ Day on September 8.
