Following conflicting reports about Henry Cavill's ongoing tenure as Superman in the DCU, James Gunn finally confirmed that he is working on a new Man of Steel project about a younger take on the character, and a new actor is being sought to step into the role.
Fans of Cavill's iteration of the legendary hero were understandably disappointed, but could the DCU's loss be The Witcher's gain?
Shortly after Cavill's return as Supes in Black Adam's mid-credits scene was made public, Netflix announced that the actor would be leaving the role of Geralt of Rivia, with Liam Hemsworth stepping in to play the monster-hunter for season 4. Now, fans are hoping there's a chance Cavill might return as Geralt since he's officially hung up the cape, with online campaigns once again doing the rounds.
Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely.
For one, Hemsworth has almost certainly signed a contract at this stage, so even if the showrunners wanted Cavill back, there'd be a lot of red tape to wade through to make it happen. Plus, we don't even know for sure that Cavill left the Netflix series because of Superman. Reports have indicated that he hasn't been happy playing the character for a while because he feels the writers/showrunners don't respect the source material. While this has been refuted, there's no smoke without fire, so we wouldn't be surprised if there's at least some truth to the rumors.
Stranger things have been known to happen - after all, who'd have thought Cavill would be done with Superman so soon after announcing his return? - but we reckon fans will have to make do with one more season of The Witcher with Cavill in the lead.
