During last year's Disney Investor Day, Lucasfilm dropped an elaborate announcement video with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins revealing she would take the helm of Rogue Squadron.
A few months ago, we learned that the production on the movie had been halted due to Jenkins' supposed scheduling issues. It was a little strange considering no one seemed to know what else the filmmaker might be working on, but the plot has thickened courtesy of the latest update from Disney.
In a release calendar sent out by the studios this week (via Screen Rant) covering 2022 to 2029, Rogue Squadron remains dated for December 22, 2023. Either Lucasfilm is hoping it will still be done in time or Disney simply isn't ready to announce a new release date. With no actors seemingly attached to the project, we're a little sceptical about its chances of hitting that 2023 slot as of right now.
Pre-production was supposed to kick off by the end of last year, and while Jenkins does remain attached to direct, we can't help but wish Lucasfilm would share a more concrete update about the project.
We haven't had a Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker, and it doesn't look like Lucasfilm has another project they can release in Rogue Squadron's place (Taika Waititi and Kevin Feige are developing separate movies, but neither appears to be ready to start shooting). Lots of content is coming to Disney+, but at this rate, there will have been half a decade between big screen Star Wars adventures.
As always, we'll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more.
