The most recent box office estimates pointed to Avatar: The Way of Water taking in upwards of $500 million over the course of its opening weekend, and while it took a little longer to hit that milestone, James Cameron's sequel has now passed the half a billion mark.

The Way of Water made $18.3M yesterday, topping Rise of Gru‘s $17.5M to give it the biggest Tuesday of 2022. This brings its domestic total to $168.6M, with a $387.3M overseas cume taking it to $555.9M worldwide.

Not too shabby at all, and with little in the way of competition this side of 2023, the Avatar sequel will likely perform very well over the holiday period. Cameron has noted that the movie would need to hit $2 billion before the end of its theaterical run just to break even, so it had a long road ahead!

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.
