Earlier this year, it was confirmed that we'll return to the Monsterverse in a new Apple TV+ series that puts the spotlight on Monarch. The secretive organisation played a key role in Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong, so the opportunity to better explore their place in this kaiju-strewn reality is definitely an exciting prospect for fans.
Now, though, it appears as if the series has been hit by a minor delay. According to Production Weekly, shooting has been pushed back from May to July. This isn't overly surprising given how movies and TV shows still find themselves in a constant state of flux due to COVID, but there's been no casting news or word on a release date, so we might have to be patient.
It was recently confirmed that Godzilla vs. Kong 2, likely a spinoff titled Son of Kong, will start shooting in Australia later this year. We're assuming Production Weekly hasn't confused the two projects here, though it's certainly possible Legendary will look to save money by shooting them simultaneously.
However, we probably shouldn't expect any crossovers as it's previously been confirmed that the untitled Monarch spinoff is set shortly after the events of Godzilla. "Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real," reads the logline, "the series explores one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch."
There are potential ways this could tie into Son of Kong, of course, but with so much confusion surrounding the MonsterVerse's future (including Godzilla's involvement), some official news would be welcomed. For now, we can at least confirm Chris Black and Matt Fraction remain attached to this Monarch TV show alongside Toho executives Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita.
Stay tuned for updates.
