Sony Pictures' latest blockbuster 65 releases today and though early reviews are not so great, there's still great interest in the prehistoric sci-fi action film. The Adam Driver-led dino adventure is in theaters starting today, March 10. But in a post-Covid world, there's always the question as to whether a movie is releasing simultaneously on streaming services.
Unfortunately, that is not the case for 65, which is exclusively showing in theaters only. So if you're interested in checking out the movie, you'll have to head to your local theater. Otherwise, you'll just have to wait for it to become available to rent or buy on digital platforms or watching on streaming services.
Thankfully, we already know where 65 will be headed once its theatrical run has ended. Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment have a multiyear, exclusive first pay window licensiving deal in the United States for theatrically released SPE feature films. As Sony is the studio that produced 65, we can expect to watch it on Netflix during that first pay window, which is usually about 18 months.
Once that window hsa expired, the 65 will probably head to Disney+, which has the rights to the second-pay window.
No streaming date has been announced for 65, but Sony theatrical releases tend to drop on Netflix four to six months after they've debuted in theaters. It likely depends on the fiml's box office performance.
Based on Sony's own history, the earliest we could see 65 land on Netflix would be 120 days from its theatrical release, so around July 8th, 2023. At the latest, which has been 168 days, it would come to the streaming platform on August 25th, 2023. Again, this is merely an estimate based on past movies, and the dates are subject to change.
Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods — the writing duo behind the hit movie A Quiet Place — 65 is a sci-fi action film. Adam Driver stars as Mills, a pilot who crash lands on an unknown planet only to discover that he's actually on Earth 65 million years ago. Stranded with just one other survivor, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), the two must make a trek across the unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures for their one chance at rescue. Check out the trailer below!
Despite the intriguing concept and starpower of Adam Driver, however, critics have been unimpressed with 65. With 24 reviews counted for as of the time of this writing, 65 sits at just a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. Perhaps an early arrival on streaming services isn't totally out of the realm of possibility given the film's lackluster reception.
