We first heard about this one back in January, and intriguing-sounding sci-fi thriller Ash has now found its A-list leads.

THR reports that both Tessa Thompson (Thor: Love and Thunder) and Joseph Gordon Levitt (Inception) have signed on to star in the movie, which will mark the sophomore feature of Grammy-winning musician and filmmaker Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison. District 9 director Neill Blomkamp has also boarded the project as an executive producer.

According to the logline, Ash will follow "a woman (Thompson) who wakes up on a distant planet to find the rest of the crew of her space station viciously murdered. She has to decide whether to trust the man (Gordon-Levitt) sent to rescue her. During their investigation into the killings, however, he begins to wonder if she is as innocent as she pretends to be."

Flying Lotus will direct from an original screenplay by German-Brazilian writer Jonni Remmler.

“It’s an absolute dream come true to collaborate with some of the most talented actors out there!,” said Ellison. GFC’s Founder and Managing Director Matthew Metcalfe and XYZ Films Partner Nate Bolotin added, “We couldn’t be happier for Tessa and Joseph to headline this film, they are both incredibly talented and gifted actors. With Steve at the helm, this is going to be a truly visionary film and we couldn’t be more excited to take the project into production in 2023.”

It may not sound like a particularly original premise, but considering the talent involved, Ash should be well worth keeping an eye on.

The movie is expected to enter production in New Zealand next year.
