Trekkies have a new way to celebrate 60 years of Star Trek. Wizards of the Coast has revealed a wave of cards from its Magic: The Gathering crossover with the franchise, and the set reaches into almost every corner of the Trek universe, from the original Enterprise crew to the Cerritos.
Wizards describes the set as a celebration of the franchise's "60-year legacy," bringing "tales of directive-defying captains and eclectic exoplanets from across the decades." According to the publisher, "Nearly every incarnation of Star Trek, from The Original Series to the latest voyages into space, is here."
Every Era Of Star Trek
The set includes cards from The Original Series and its films, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks, along with the Kelvin timeline films that started with Star Trek in 2009. Wizards has even added a filter to its online card gallery that lets fans sort cards by era.
Iconic episodes get their own cards as well. Saga cards retell stories like The City on the Edge of Forever and In the Pale Moonlight, while the set's borderless scene cards recreate famous moments across several connected cards:
- Showdown at Sector 001 shows Data's confrontation with Locutus from The Next Generation.
- Mirror, Mirror brings the classic Original Series episode to life, goatee'd Spock included.
- Unimatrix Zero depicts Janeway's fight with the Borg Collective in Voyager, with a special appearance by Seven of Nine.
- Deep Space Find gathers Odo, Quark, Sisko, Jadzia and more of the Deep Space Nine cast in a nine-card scene.
Q is also along for the ride, both on his own card and on an Enterprise-Q Scene Box that shows him causing chaos on the bridge. A second Divergent Timeline Scene Box shows familiar Enterprise crew members with different faces than their main set versions.
Deep cuts are scattered throughout the set too. The Original Series' Salt Vampire shows up as a Classic Enterprise card, Dr. Beverly Crusher gets an LCARS frame version, and Klingon chancellor Gowron appears on a Klingon frame card. The set's 30 stardates cards take famous Magic reprints and recast them with alternate takes on Trek characters, including Kelvin timeline versions, with Kenrith, the Returned King becoming "General Picard, Earth Warlord."
Picard, Spock, Worf And The Borg Queen Take Command
Four Commander decks will launch with the set, each built around a different side of the franchise. Federation Fleet is led by Jean-Luc Picard, Landing Party by Commander Spock, Klingon Fury by Worf and We Are the Borg by the Borg Queen. Each deck includes 32 new-to-Magic cards.
The Klingons get extra love with a dedicated Klingon frame, and some of those cards also appear in a Klingon script version written entirely in the Klingon language, as if they came straight from Qo'noS.
Cards Signed By Star Trek Actors
The rarest cards in the set are seven signed headliner cards, each hand-signed by the Star Trek actor it depicts and randomly inserted into Collector Boosters. Fewer than 250 copies of each exist. The revealed headliners include Captain James T. Kirk, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Captain Kathryn Janeway, Lieutenant Commander Data, Seven of Nine and Geordi La Forge.
"When you hold one of these cards in your hand, you're holding a piece of Star Trek history," Wizards says. "It's unlike anything we've done before for Magic."
Other collectible treatments include LCARS frame cards styled after the Enterprise's computer, Classic Enterprise cards inspired by vintage Trek movie posters, holodeck and away team basic lands, and Spacecraft promo cards drawn as Starfleet schematics.
Even fans who have never played Magic may find a reason to pick up a pack. Five Welcome Decks will also be available for newer players.
