For 60 years, Star Trek has delivered some of science fiction's most celebrated television. But while earlier shows were often given several seasons to develop their characters and find their footing, today's television landscape doesn't always afford that same opportunity.

That's the unfortunate case for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which was canceled after just one season had aired. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, the Paramount+ series divided fans, with some criticizing its younger cast, storytelling, and direction.

Now, Robert Picardo, who reprised his role as the Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager in the series, believes the backlash against Starfleet Academy reflects a larger cultural and political divide, one that he fears has put the franchise's longstanding values under attack.

Speaking with TrekMovie, Picardo reflected on the show's premature cancellation and suggested that the current political climate may have played a role in its reception.

"Every Star Trek show was criticized in its first two or three seasons, and then took often till season 3 to get on track," Picardo explained. "And even though I think the quality of our show was great, we were kind of killed in the cradle, and I believe part of it is the present political moment in our culture that diversity, that all of Star Trek's core values are now out of fashion temporarily."

"We see diversity under attack, and therefore Star Trek is under attack because that's what Star Trek's always been about," the actor said.

Diversity has been a part of Star Trek since the original series debuted in 1966, and the franchise has never shied away from addressing social and political issues; however, some fans believe its newer shows have become too focused on those topics. For Picardo, those values are what make Star Trek special, and he hopes they remain part of the franchise's future.

"So hopefully, whenever they create the next Star Trek movie and Star Trek show, they'll remember what it was that made Star Trek special, and that present weather conditions in politics will change, and Star Trek once again will emerge with all of its values intact," he continued. "That's what I believe and I hope for. But right now, you know, the feeling has been a little grim recently."

While Picardo believes the cultural climate contributed to the show's struggles, Paramount+ has not publicly attributed its cancellation to political backlash. Despite the disappointing news, Picardo had positive things to say about the upcoming second season, revealing that he's already seen portions of it while recording additional dialogue.

"I hear season 2 is even better from the producers. I've seen quite a bit of it while I've been doing ADR on it, and it looks spectacular," he said.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will return for its second and final season in March 2027 on Paramount+, bringing the story of its young Starfleet cadets to a close.
