The Star Trek panel at San Diego Comic-Con was largely disappointing. While we saw plenty of familiar faces from across the final frontier gather to celebrate the franchise's 60th anniversary, there was little in terms of big moments or surprise reveals. That's mostly because of the state of limbo the franchise is in right now.
With no new Star Trek shows in development, the focus was primarily on the franchise as a whole, along with some small announcements. Strange New Worlds received a sneak peek highlighting future episodes for Season 4.
Perhaps the biggest announcement was for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, a bit odd considering the series has already been canceled and will end after its second season.
In any case, for those still invested in the series and who plan on sticking around for Season 2, a new cast member was announced during the panel.
Actor Ruaridh Aldington has been cast as a character named "Keats," a young cadet with a mysterious backstory. Paramount shared a first-look photo of Keats along with an official description that reads:
Keats [is] a young alien our cadets encounter on an away mission who possesses a mysterious backstory. When the cadets make the risky decision to bring him back to Starfleet Academy, they realize he’s a wanted man, and his life is in danger.
It sounds like the overarching story of Season 2 will somehow revolve around Keats and his backstory. If there's one complaint I have for Starfleet Academy, it's that we're getting another young brooding character with a mysterious, perhaps troubling, backstory who has no reason to join Starfleet, but is now challenged to stay. Will he buy into the concept of Starfleet and help the cadets or will his backstory make it difficult to let his guard down and trust others? I think we all know the answer to that one.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was fairly well-received by critics, averaging a 84% on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season. General audiences, on the other hand, were largely disappointed. With a 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, not everyone was enthused by turning Star Trek into a teen drama. I, personally, don't mind the series, but it does give off immature CW vibes.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2 has already been filmed, but Paramount has not yet announced when it will premiere. In the meantime, Strange New Worlds Season 4 just kicked off with its first episode now available on Paramount+.
