Not too long ago, Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were set to head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away to write a new Star Wars trilogy. The news broke in 2018, but the duo exited their deal with Disney and Lucasfilm the following year to create a slate of projects for Netflix instead.
Doing the rounds to promote Metal Lords ahead of its debut on April 8, Weiss was asked by ComicBook.com if he and Benioff remain open to potentially working on that Star Wars project again.
"Right at the moment, I'm so excited about Metal Lords coming out, and there's also The Three-Body Problem that we're working on and, between those two things, that accounts for about 150% of my attention span," Weiss explained. Asked if their focus could change in the coming years, Weiss chose his words carefully, and joked: "I manage expectations on my mental capacity."
It's thought this trilogy would have been set in the Old Republic era, but Lucasfilm has since moved on from that to seemingly focus on the High Republic era instead. There's been speculation "creative differences" led to Benioff and Weiss' departure, while some fans remain convinced the negative reaction to the Game of Thrones finale resulted in Lucasfilm changing tact.
Either way, the Star Wars franchise's future on the big screen remains uncertain. Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron appears to have stalled, but we know Kevin Feige and Taika Waititi are working on separate projects. How far along those are is hard to say as they appear to still be in the writing stage.
