Obi-Wan Kenobi's story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where the hero faced his greatest defeat - the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.
ComicBookMovie.com was present for the show's global press conference earlier this week and Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Moses Ingram (Reva), and director Deborah Chow were all on hand to answer questions. The latter explained her approach to the Disney+ series, sharing an unexpected comparison between Obi-Wan Kenobi and R-Rated comic book movies like Logan and Joker.
"I think I was the most excited about getting the opportunity to do a character-driven story, in a similar way – it's a different tone – but something like Joker or Logan, where you take one character out of a big franchise and then you really have the time and you go a lot deeper with the character," the filmmaker said. "So, that to me seemed really exciting to get to do in Star Wars."
Later, Chow would go on to share how another Star Wars project inspired her approach to this story. While the director has previously helmed episodes of The Mandalorian, it was 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that was key for her here. "One of the [Star Wars projects] that I think is really interesting visually is Rogue One," Chow noted. "And I was really looking a lot at the atmospheric sense in that, and a lot of the visuals in that, which was, you know, pretty awesome."
We'll have more to share with you from this event soon, but it's fair to say "Ben" Kenobi is in safe hands with Chow. The filmmaker would later point out that Obi-Wan Kenobi is a project she's been working on for three years, so to call this series a passion project may be an understatement.
Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+ on May 27.
