The Game Awards 2025 delivered more than one Star Wars announcement. Alongside the reveal of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, fans were treated to a major surprise: the announcement of a new racing title, Star Wars: Galactic Racer.
The all-new, high-stakes racing game takes us to the Outer Rim where syndicates are bankrolling an underground, unsanctioned racing circuit. At the heart of the campaign's story is a character named Shade, “a lone racer with a dream of glory and revenge."
A teaser trailer for Star Wars: Galactic Racer introduces us to the high-stakes world of Outer World racing and the drama that it entails.
"Players will learn more about Shade as they progress through the game’s campaign." teased Matt Webster, co-founder of Fuse Games, the studio developing Galactic Racer. "Your aim is to survive long enough to earn your shot at becoming an elite racing pilot."
Star Wars: Galactic Racer is described as a "run-based" racing title with mechanics associated with the roguelite/roguelike genre. With a variety of vehicles to choose from and planets to visit, players must adapt to the varying challenges presented by each world, including branching routes, varied environments, and dynamic risk-taking choices that ensures no two runs are the same.
“We’ve drawn real inspiration from runs-based games so the player will have meaningful, consequential decisions to be making on how they chose their path to become an elite racing pilot — from the vehicle they choose to start with, the upgrade choices they make to create a build that really suits their playstyle and what events they select in determining their path to become champion of the League,” Webster explained. “Along the way you’ll compete with rivals, journey to new planets, and master different classes of repulsor craft — or speeders — each with their own distinct capabilities."
Star Wars: Galactic Racer is being developed by Fuse Games, a relatively new studio founded by former co-founders and lead developers at Criterion, best known for beloved racing titles Burnout Paradise and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Racing has long been part of the Star Wars universe, but surprisingly few games have focused on the genre. The most iconic, of course, is Star Wars: Episode I: Racer, the classic 1999 title inspired by The Phantom Menace’s podracing sequence.
“When a team with such amazing racing chops like Fuse proposed a new expression of racing in a galaxy far, far away, it was a true no brainer decision,” said Douglas Reilly, VP nad GM of Lucasfilm Games. “One of the great things about Star Wars is that it can be a perfect fit for many genres and audiences. We are always looking for new and creative ways to revisit genres fans have enjoyed in the past and find unique expressions in the future.”
Star Wars: Galactic Racer is slated to release in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC.
