On Tuesday, we learned that Lucasfilm is moving forward with a new Star Wars movie: The Mandalorian & Grogu. This wasn't one of the three upcoming titles announced at Star Wars Celebration last April, leaving fans excited and confused in equal measure.

The Hollywood Reporter has since shared an update, revealing that before last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Lucasfilm "was intent on making season four of [The] Mandalorian." Confirming Jon Favreau had indeed written all the scripts, it's said things were re-evaluated while Hollywood ground to a halt and making a movie then became a new priority.

The trade adds that season 4 of The Mandalorian is "definitely not a given" but reveals, "If the movie is a success, it could lead to next phase of Mando storytelling becoming movie sequels." Unsurprisingly, that will depend on how fans react to The Mandalorian & Grogu and those all-important box office numbers.

The report goes on to note that Dave Filoni's movie is still happening and is now coming after Ahsoka season 2. There may be a small delay to both projects, however, as Favreau is said to be writing the script for The Mandalorian & Grogu alongside Filoni!

Last year, Pedro Pascal - who only plays Din Djarin in the recording booth these days - was asked about his involvement with a possible fourth season of The Mandalorian

"It’s a mystery. There’s such preciousness around even saying that I’m signed up for season 4 if it’s already written. I’m naturally a blabbermouth, but I really get protective of it, because I get a thrill out of the surprises that are in store for the audience. And I don’t want the likes of you to ruin it for everybody by answering your questions. This is all going to go into print, so this banter...it’s not really going to translate very well."

Despite continued false reports that Pascal is leaving the role behind, there's no way Lucasfilm would announce The Mandalorian & Grogu without the actor being locked in. Plus, for him, it's arguably become one of the easiest jobs he could hope for as an actor even if the odd occasion he does suit up presets some challenges.

"I knew what I was signing up for, though wearing the mask has its challenges. You’d be fascinated to find out what happens if you can’t see just below your eyes. And in the armour… my shoulders are pretty wide, and then they get much wider. So my depth perception completely changes, and there is no peripheral vision. I’m like a human pinball machine. But you’re very protected. You have armour from the tip of your toes to the top of your head. A very, very thick, strong plastic."

The Mandalorian & Grogu doesn't have a confirmed release date but is expected to arrive in theaters on May 22, 2026.
