FX's Sons of Anarchy is regarded as of the best modern TV shows of recent times and it was a show that didn't have any fear about killing off its characters.
So when news of a sequel series first surfaced, fans were confused as to how that could unfold with so many of the main cast resting in the afterlife.
Well, those fans now have their answer, as the sequel series is going the 'meta' route with series star Charlie Hunnam leading development of a revival series where most of the main cast returns. The catch is that instead of reviving dead characters or picking up where the show left off, the cast is playing exaggerated, fictionalized versions of themselves.
Titled Legends, the limited series kicks off at a fan convention where the original cast reunites, only to get pulled into a very real, very dangerous situation. Forced to step up, the estranged cast has to rely on each other as the line between their real lives and their badass TV personas starts to completely blur.
Returning cast members include Hunam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi.
The official plot description for the series reads, "When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”
“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” said Nick Grad, FX Entertainment president via a press statement.
“Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
If the show's unusual premise sounds familiar, you've likely watched Tim Allen's Galaxy Quest, which sees the washed-up cast of a canceled 1990s sci-fi TV series mistaken for real space heroes by desperate aliens.
When they're thrust into actual interstellar warfare, the actors must rely on their fictional roles to survive and save the day.
It's unclear if there's a sci-fi twist here with Legends, but there is the part from the official description where the cast faces a real-world threat more dangerous than anything previously seen on the show...it makes us start to wonder.
Original Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter took to social media to quickly reveal that he has no involvement with the show, stating: "I’m not involved with Legends at all, nor should I be."
He continued, "It has nothing to do with the characters I created or the mythology. It is really about the show and the legacy of the show, and quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy."
"I just want folks to know that Charlie came to me early on, when he was in the process of pitching this to the network, to ask for my blessing, knowing that the IP would probably not be able to be invoked for various reasons of legalese stuff, and I gave Charlie my full blessing."
