It’s becoming more and more obvious that Ryan Reynolds is finding a comfortable place for himself at Netflix, having worked with the streamer first on Michael Bay’s 6 Underground, which was about half-a-dozen vigilantes staging their own deaths so that they can track down their opponents. Then, he co-starred with Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson in the heist action-comedy, Red Notice, which is spawning a pair of sequels that will be shot back-to-back.
Before that, however, he’s starring in The Adam Project, from director Shawn Levy. In it he plays Adam, a time-traveling pilot who has to team up with his younger self (Walker Scobell) as well as his late father to not only come to terms with the past, but save the future as well.
In an interview with with Slashfilm, Levy elaborated, “It’s Ryan Reynolds back to enlist the help of his 12-year-old self and his father, who he lost when he was young. So what if you could go back and tell your younger self you’re going to be okay? What if you could go back and understand your mom or your dad from the age that you are now? Those are the really interesting questions that The Adam Project explores, but with time travel and some sick-ass tech and big action.”
He added to collider.com, “Obviously there’s a load of action and really all the things we want from a time travel movie, but it’s ultimately very much a descendant of Frequency and Field of Dreams. And the fun of it is very much kind of Back to the Future-inspired, but the heart of it is more Frequency and Field of Dreams."
At least part of the casting is resulting in a semi-reunion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Zoe Saldana (Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy), Jennifer Garner (Elektra in the former 20th Century Fox branch of the MCU) and Mark Ruffalo (everybody but Edward Norton's favorite Incredible Hulk). The Adam Project begins streaming on Netflix March 11.
