It seems there won't be a legendary Sun Summoner coming to rescue Shadow and Bone's third season as news has come down that Netflix has opted not to continue the series.
The lengthy WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes appear to be to blame, as Netflix does not believe they can write and film the third season in time to fit into the streamer's programming schedule.
Deadline adds that all the streamer's series were in jeopardy unless they had broken out in a big way like One Piece or The Night Agent.
The Hollywood trade adds that the show's second season did not have the same impact as season 1, with the second season failing to crack the streamer's #1 television spot.
Shadow and Bone was a fan-favorite Netflix fantasy streaming television series created by Eric Heisserer. It is based on Leigh Bardugo's fantasy series and takes place in the Grishaverse, which includes the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. After the first season's eight episodes debuted on April 23, 2021, it developed a strong cult following. The series was renewed for a second season in June 2021, which premiered its eight episode continuation on March 16, 2023.
Fans who had hoped to see the story continue were disappointed by the cancelation of Shadow and Bone. There is still a chance that the show will be renewed by another streaming service or production group.
Just recently, Warrior Nun was canceled at Netflix but renewed for a three-film continuation. Fans of Shadow and Bone are hoping for something similar to occur, or at the very least, for a spinoff following Crow.
Shadow and Bone starred Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov, Ben Barnes as General Aleksander Kirigan, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa, Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, Zoë Wanamaker as Baghra, Kit Young as Jesper Fahey, Daisy Head as Genya Safin and Lewis Tan as Tolya Yul-Bataar.
Eric Heisserer served as showrunner and head writer.
Over on Instagram novelist Leigh Bardugo stated, "Friends, by now you've probably heard that there will be no season 3 for Shadow and Bone and no Six of Crows spinoff. The news hit me hard. I'm heartbroken and deeply disappointed, but I'm also trying to hold on to my very real gratitude. Most authors never get to see their work adapted. Many who do end up regretting the experience. I'm one of the lucky few who can look at an adaptation with pride and tremendous joy. I am also grateful to our writers, our crew, and our extraordinary cast who are not only wildly talented, but genuinely good people."
