ALADDIN Star Mena Massoud Doesn't Think Disney's Planned Sequel Is Going To Happen

It seems Disney may have put its plans for an Aladdin sequel back in the lamp.

A follow-up to Guy Ritchie's 2019 live-action remake was announced shortly after the first movie proved to be yet another huge box office success for the Mouse House, but we haven't had many official announcements relating to the project since.

Now, star Mena Massoud, who played the titular rags-to-riches hero, has shared a disappointing update.

When asked by one of his followers on Twitter if "we're still getting Aladdin 2," the actor responded: "Very unlikely at this point."

Last we heard, Massoud, Will Smith (The Genie) and Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine) had all signed-on to return in their respective roles, so we're not sure what changed. The trades haven't weighed-in yet, but we'd expect them to do a bit of digging after Massoud's comments.

Story details were never revealed, but Ritchie did confirm that the movie would incorporate elements of both animated sequels, The Return Of Jafar and Aladdin & The King Of Thieves.

"Aladdin is a lovable street urchin who meets Princess Jasmine, the beautiful daughter of the sultan of Agrabah. While visiting her exotic palace, Aladdin stumbles upon a magic oil lamp that unleashes a powerful, wisecracking, larger-than-life genie. As Aladdin and the genie start to become friends, they must soon embark on a dangerous mission to stop the evil sorcerer Jafar from overthrowing young Jasmine's kingdom," reads the first movie's synopsis.
